The Bishop’s Ranch is seeking a Director of Hospitality Operations. In the fulfillment of the Ranch mission, the Director of Hospitality Operations is concerned with the guest and group experience, emphasizing the leadership, collaboration and development of the staff department teams. A full time, exempt, residential position, it includes hosting and frequent contact with guests. Living at the Ranch is required for the fulfillment of the job duties. Modest on-site housing is provided. The Director of Hospitality Operations reports to the Executive Director.

1. Mission-Driven Hospitality: With 40 guest rooms, 8 meeting spaces, a refectory that can accommodate up to 145 diners, and 365 acres of ranch land, The Bishop’s Ranch hosts nearly 6,000 guests each year, in a variety of day-use, overnight retreats, summer camps and hosted programs. The Director of Hospitality Operations will deliver mission-driven hospitality through a well managed staff including the Hosting Team, Executive Chef, Housekeeping Manager, and Facilities and Land Manager.
- Oversee the guest experience, including arrival, departure, and the progress of conferences and retreats, maintaining quality of service standards and consistency, seeking out guest evaluations and recording and sharing experience measurements
- Share the Ranch vision of hospitality and inclusion with guests and staff through example and action;
- Ensure key staff teams deliver coordinated actions; ensure facilities and grounds are safe and attractive, ensure compliance with all relevant local and state laws and requirements, ensure a clean, well-prepared, comfortable, welcoming, inclusive environment which allows guests to focus on what they need to accomplish, ensure ranch visitors are well nourished through continued excellence in the food service program
- Grow and build close relationships with groups and individuals both within and outside the Diocese needed to maintain and expand current reservations.
- Keep abreast of industry trends in conference center management, camp management and hospitality, and assess the applicability of trends to the Ranch
- Oversee staff response to immediate guest needs, develop and schedule a hosting team of staff and volunteers, and serve as host when needed. Keep hosting protocols up to date. Plan and implement host training.
- Respond to urgent guest or staff needs or emergencies, including after regular hours
- Maintain, Improve and Implement Ranch Emergency and Safety plans.
two. Operational Leadership: The Bishop’s Ranch is in the process of creating a new long-term strategic plan. While this work will primarily be the responsibility of the Board and the Executive Director, the Director of Hospitality Operations will need to support by implementing a near term operational plan which supports the Ranch’s mission and values as well as the long-term strategic plan; implement the operational plan, meeting the necessary criteria and timeframes. Under normal operating conditions, The Bishop’s Ranch has a diverse staff of 30 full and part time staff members, an additional 12 summer camp staff, and an active board. Specific responsibilities include:
- Help monitor department budgets to ensure reservations revenue goals are met or exceeded and Ranch resources are used efficiently and effectively.
- Manage staff, ensuring they are engaged, aware of and committed to Ranch values and consistently meeting daily operations
- Hosting, Guest Services and Administration
- Oversee the Hosting Team and Experience.
- Monitor paid and volunteer hosts, direct all hosting needs, schedule hosts, and serve as a host.
- Keep Hosting Manual Up to Date and Offer Training and Coaching to all Hosts.
- With assistance from the Reservations Coordinator, monitor and report guest usage.
- Collaborate with Exec. Director and others on pricing, budget development and oversight
- Oversee management of physical office including maintaining supplies, technology, related equipment and contracts with service providers and vendors.

- With over 300 acres of undeveloped natural lands, The Ranch is charged with stewardship, adaptation and conservation in a changing climate, so that the healing and inspiring power of nature can be experienced now and enjoyed by future generations.
- With Executive Director help implement capital improvements and larger-scale projects in conjunction with outside contractors and Facilities and Land Manager and staff.
- Help utilize and develop volunteers to fulfill the Ranch’s mission.
- Hosting, Guest Services and Administration
- Collaborate with Executive Director and others on goal setting and long-range planning to implement Ranch mission
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, Program Director, Chaplain and others to support Ranch sponsored programs and camps.
- Provide verbal and written reports as requested.

- Strong listening and communication skills
- Business acumen to ensure that revenue and expenses are effectively maintained within the operating budget

- Knowledge of physical facility maintenance preferred

We fulfill the mission of the Ranch by providing hospitality for retreats, conferences and other gatherings to groups and individuals from the Diocese of California, other churches, and non-profit groups. Our goal is to provide these services in a personal and relaxed but efficient way that enables guests to reach their goals for spiritual, personal, and organizational growth.
Working at The Bishop’s Ranch is service oriented, and doing our jobs successfully is based on teamwork. Because of the wide-ranging nature of the tasks involved in caring for our guests and facilities, it may be necessary to perform tasks outside our usual line of work. For example: when on duty in the kitchen a guest may come in and ask where sports equipment is found; an office worker may be called to help when a guest finds a broken water valve; a maintenance worker may need to help in the kitchen when a group has suddenly increased in numbers, or a cook must leave due to illness. The flexibility to help in such a situation in order to support our guests and the overall goals of the Ranch is a requirement of working at The Bishop’s Ranch.
